How to Start Creating a Self-Care Routine that Actually Works

Self-care looks different for everyone, and that’s exactly why creating your own routine matters. In a world that constantly tells us how we should relax, recharge, and show up for ourselves, it’s easy to forget that the most effective self-care is the kind that actually fits your life. Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed, burned out, or simply craving more balance, building a personalized self-care routine can help you reconnect with yourself in meaningful, sustainable ways. In this post, we’ll explore how to create a self-care routine that supports your needs, aligns with your lifestyle, and feels nourishing rather than like another item on your to-do list.

How to Start Creating a Self-Care Routine that Actually Works

Maybe you’re not sure where to start when it comes to creating a self-care routine, or maybe you feel like you’re simply too busy. I get it — I’ve been there. It’s so easy to let work, family, and everyday responsibilities take priority over our own well-being. But taking care of yourself isn’t selfish; it’s essential. I’m here to help you get started with a few simple tips and mindset shifts that can set you on the path to a healthier, happier you.

1. Make a List of What Fills Your Cup

Start by writing down activities you genuinely enjoy and things that help you relax. These don’t have to be elaborate or time-consuming — think reading, taking a walk, journaling, stretching, or enjoying a quiet cup of coffee. Once you have your list, ask yourself: Could I realistically fit some of these into my weekly routine? Even small moments of joy add up.

2. Identify Habits You Want to Build (or Break)

Next, think about habits you’d like to develop, as well as habits you might want to let go of because they’re no longer serving you. Maybe you want to move your body more, get better sleep, or practice mindfulness. On the flip side, maybe you want to cut back on negative self-talk or late-night scrolling. Awareness is the first step toward change.

3. Take an Honest Look at Your Schedule

Look at your weekly schedule and find pockets of free time. If it feels like you don’t have any, take note of how much time you spend scrolling on your phone in the evenings or during breaks. Even reclaiming 10–15 minutes can create space for intentional self-care.

4. Schedule It Like an Appointment

Write your self-care time into your planner and treat it like any other important commitment. Schedule yourself in — and don’t break the date. When you prioritize yourself on your calendar, you’re far more likely to follow through.

5. Treat Yourself (Yes, You’re Allowed)

Self-care isn’t always about being productive or improving yourself. Sometimes, it’s about indulging a little. Buy that special bath bomb from Lush, pour a glass of champagne, or do something that feels a bit extravagant just because it makes you happy. You deserve it.

6. Start Small and Be Flexible

Your self-care routine doesn’t have to be perfect or look like anyone else’s. Some days you’ll do more, some days less — and that’s okay. Even tiny daily habits — like drinking an extra glass of water, taking a short walk, or writing down one thing you’re grateful for — add up over time and make a big difference in how you feel.

7. Try Mini Self-Care Bundles

If you’re unsure where to start, try creating mini “self-care bundles” you can fit into different parts of your day:

  • 5 minutes: Stretch and take a few deep breaths
  • 15 minutes: Read a chapter of a book, journal, or listen to music
  • 30 minutes: Take a relaxing bath, go for a walk outside, or meditate

8. Reflect and Adjust

Check in with yourself regularly: What’s working? What feels good? What do I want more of? Self-care is personal, and your routine should evolve as your needs do.

Creating a self-care routine doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Start small, be consistent, and remember: caring for yourself is one of the best investments you can make. 💛

What’s one small self-care practice you can try this week that would make you feel nourished and seen?

Let’s be friends!
